تدور أحداث رواية «هاميلكار» في قرطاج والجزء الغربي من البحر الأبيض المتوسط بين عامي 241 و228 قبل الميلاد تقريبًا — وهي السنوات التي أعقبت مباشرة هزيمة قرطاج في الحرب البونية الأولى، والخسارة الموجعة لجزيرتي صقلية وسردينيا، والثورة المدمرة للمرتزقة التي تلت ذلك. على خلفية هذا الإذلال الوطني، يبرز هاميلكار باركا باعتباره الشخصية الوحيدة القادرة على إعادة بناء قوة قرطاج. تنتهي الرواية بوفاته خلال حملته في شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية، في اللحظة التي يوجه فيها حنبعل — ابنه البالغ من العمر تسع سنوات — أول ضربة بسيفه ويشاهد والده يسقط في نهر بيتيس. يتمسك حنبعل بالسيف. إحدى كفيه مفتوحة، تنزف. يتذكر كلمات العرافة العجوز العمياء منذ سنوات: “لا تخف أيها الصغير. هذا الجرح سيشفى. هذه اليد ستكسر الحجر الأبيض.” ينظر إلى الفراغ. ثم يرى يداً تمتد نحوه، ويسمع صوت صدربعل:
“حنبعل! خذ يدي!”
تنتهي الرواية عند هذا الحد — في لحظة الميراث، مع تعليق أمل قرطاج العظيم بين أب ميت وابن حي.

“Hamilcar” is set in Carthage and the western Mediterranean between approximately 241 and 228 BCE — the years immediately following Carthage’s defeat in the First Punic War, the traumatic loss of Sicily and Sardinia, and the devastating Mercenary Revolt that followed. Against this backdrop of national humiliation, Hamilcar Barca emerges as the one figure capable of rebuilding Carthaginian power. The novel ends with his death during his Iberian campaign, at the moment when Hannibal — his nine-year-old son — takes his first sword-stroke and watches his father fall into the river Baetis. Hannibal clings to the blade. One palm is cut open, bleeding. He remembers the old blind seeress’s words from years before: “Do not fear, little one. This wound will heal. This hand will break the white stone.” He looks down into the void. Then he sees a hand reaching toward him, and hears Hasdrubal’s voice:
-“Hannibal! Take my hand!”
The novel ends there — at the moment of inheritance, with Carthage’s great hope suspended between a dead father and a living son.
